Abstract
What determines the choice of political institutions in the transition to democracy? The paper applies a game-theoretic framework to analyze the choice of institutions in the cases of extrication from authoritarian rule and in cases when the old regime does not affect this choice. The relationship between institutions and ideologies is then discussed.
