A Eleição Presidencial de 1989: O Comportamento Eleitoral, em uma Cidade Brasileira

Kinzo, Maria D'Alva Gil

Resumo

This article examines the 1989 presidential election in a specific socio-economic context: Presidente Prudente, a medium-sized agricultural and commercial city in the far western portion of São Paulo State. The analysis is based on data taken from a survey that the author conducted during the 1989 electoral period, as well as from a prior study carried out in the same city during the 1976 municipal elections. The article attempts not just to analyze an urban context with determined socio-economic and political characteristics, but also to ascertain whether significant changes have taken place in municipal voting trends in the past decade. With respect to the latter point, the study provides evidence as to the presence of continuity, rather than of change, in the voting standards of Presidente Prudente, the most outstanding feature of which is a clearly conservating voting trend. Examining the social bases of support to different candidates, as well as the reasons which led the city's voters to support one of the candidates, the author points out that voter behavior in Presidente Prudente has not so much to do with socio-economic factors, but rather with factors of a political-ideological order.
