Abstract
Based on the specificity of the relationship between the State and the bourgeoisie as found in different social settings, the author proposes a distinction between bourgeois capitalism and authoritarian capitalism. The latter is portrayed through a discussion of capitalist development in Eastern Europe. The development of an authoritarian brand of capitalism is viewed as characteristic of "backward" countries where, in the relationship between the political and economic spheres, the former is predominant. It is therefore analogous to the so-called primitive accumulation phase of classic capitalist development, the difference being that it cannot be treated as a transition. Instead it represents a crystallization of the relationship between political and economic spheres since, as a result of the actual dynamics of the capitalist system's development as a whole, any "progress" achieved by "backward" or "underdeveloped" countries is rendered relative. The author analyzes the Brazilian case, defining what he considers to be the nationalist and cosmopolitan phases of its authoritarian development. He discusses the position of the peasantry in the context of this development, particularly considering the existence of an "expanding frontier" in Brazil and its potential effects on the process of authoritarian capitalist development.
