Resumo
The paper attempts to apply the theory of social roles (or identities) to the study of dominance relations between whites and Indians. After establishing an operational basis in terms of social identities, the author exposes the simple dichotomy embodied in the white-Indian opposition as one concealing a set of social roles. Each of the refers back to particular social domains or fields containing ideologies and domains or fields containing ideologies and sets of actions which such pure and simple opposition tends to mask. Thus, the paper tries to draw away from ideal binary oppositions in order to discover just what is in fact implied by the opposition between the ideal entity Indian and the ideal entity white. Specifically, the author studies the case of the Apinayé Indians from the northern part of Goiás State in their various and complex forms of contact with Brazilian society.
