Resumen
This study's objective is to test the electoral model proposed by J. D. Edelstein and M. Warner to analyze the phenomenon of trade union democracy. Using data from six trade unions in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, the author tests the model's indicators for democracy, showing that the electoral model enjoys internal consistency and allows one to establish the degree of formal democracy within the unions with some degree of accuracy. Since there are important areas of trade union policy relating to their internal dynamics which cannot be detected by the electoral model, the author goes on to analyze such areas with a view towards proposing a balanced view of this phenomenon, taking into account the formal side of union democracy and aspects related to the political culture of the group(s) acting within a given union, channels for participation by membership in drafting policies and decision-making, internal composition of groups both in office and in opposition, and the importance of outside factors vis-à-vis the very existence and performance of such groups.
