Resumen
Approaching from the concept of transition between development models, the article endeavors to frame the challenges now facing Latin American unionism. On the one hand, it analyzes such short-term questions as trade liberalization as an element within this transition. On the other, it discusses some structural factors that affect the unions' ability to draw members, including the 'feminization'' of the labor market and changes in the distribution of the labor force in sector, spatial, and social terms. Lastly, it offers some operational alternatives that unions may put into practice in order to cope with this situation.
