Resumen
The article looks at the institutions that characterize labor markets in three Third World regions: Latin America, Southern Asia, and Southeast and East Asia. These institutions are central to understanding the restraints which historical and social factors have placed on the enforcement of economic policy. The authors examine the reasons behind differences in policy choices and in economic performance itself and attribute these differences essentially to social, political, cultural, and historical factors.
