Resumen
Analyses of 525 students' compositions for Educational Television's elementary education courses in the state of Maranhão revealed some major discontinuities in the process of ideological internalization of political values taught in Moral and Civic Education modules. The results indicate that abstract ideological values can change and be even negated when confronted with concrete experiences. A efficacy of the process of political socialization was at its highest when it dealt with general conceptions of Brazilian society, particulary the alleged absence of racial prejudice. However, even when the students adhered to an idealized picture of Brazil's racial democracy, they also indicated their experience with less than ideal forms of social interaction, especially the inequality of life chances. Similarly, the students often perceived conflicts between the three major ethnic groups under examination. Thus, it is argued that the process of political socialization has a double effect: first, to reify the dominant ideology; and, second, to have it negated in specific, concrete situations.
