Abstract
This article explores the hypothesis that Brazilian economic policies after World War II increased regional differences of economic growth and accentuated intra-regional income differentials. The theoretical and empirical aspects of measurement of economic regional imbalances are discussed. Data on regional income distribution from 1946 to 1966 show two main trends: toward increased regional inequalities from 1946 to 1950, and toward a relative decrease in inequalities from 1950 onwards. The article also deals with the corrective mechanisms, such as income transference through fiscal policies, adopted by the Federal government.
