Abstract
This paper proposes a specific approach to the study of the Brazilian colonial society, in terms of the process of internal differentiation of social, economic, and political subsystems. A main concern was to develop adequate empirical indicators to substantiate that analysis. The increased degree of internal differentiation of the political subsystem vis-à-vis of other subsystems emerged as the most interesting finding.
