Abstract
The article links changes in marriage and the family in certain contemporary contexts to present-day socioeconomic and cultural transformations that have served to redefine gender relations and the patriarchal conception of the individual. Women have challenged that notion of individual which is grounded in a dichotomy between the public and the private. This phenomenon is seen as reflecting postmodern tendencies prompted by social processes that have impelled the expansion of social and personal fragmentation and of individualism. Consequently, heterogeneity and plurality have grown more common in various dimensions of the social realm, including marriage and family relations.
