Abstract
Some fundamental empirical questions in Trotsky's works are examined With the purpose of identifying the bases of the controversy between two rival viewpoints: Should Marxism be viewed as an analysis of the development of productive forces or as an analysis of class struggle? This opposition reflects a still older dispute - the one between dialectical and historical materialism. Trotsky reconciles the two by viewing class struggle as a contingent process, whose chief tool of analysis is historical materialism, understood as political praxis.
