Abstract
The article revisits Machado de Assis through a political reading of Esaú e Jacó. Some interpretations (those relevant to the argument) are first summarized in order to show that the discussion of the role of History in Machado de Assis' fiction has not yet been exhausted. It is then argued that Machado de Assis' understanding of History is linked to his literary program and that it is this Weltanschauung which lends his fictional text its unity. It is the triad History-fiction-narrative which supports and lends unity to his text.
