Abstract
The article discusses the sociological implications of the ethnomethodological proposal to examine the operations that people undertake in assigning meaning to the factual domain which guides them in conducting their everyday affairs. Specifically, this proposal implies (1) an affirmation of the unique and localized (as opposed to generic and transcendent) character of structural constraints on human conduct and (2) the postulation of an antifoundationalist sociology of knowledge, so called because it denies the possibility of any "ultimate" foundation for the validation of knowledge.
