Abstract
A model is presented for analyzing a particular type of collective action aimed at the provision of public goods: efforts by industrial workers and capitalists to improve their own economic, social, and political situations. Some reasons why collective action fails to display a general logic are outlined. The model is then described as economically as possible and its potential illustrated by applying it to certain episodes in Brazilian social history.
