Abstract
In the author's opinion economic need and action on the part of the machinery of the State are not automatic guarantees for the reproduction of the working class. It is within the privileged locus of the labor process that, in her view, workers become subordinated and disciplined to the objectives of capitalist domination. It is in that sense that she investigates the modes of recruiting, the training system, payment structures, hierarchies of control, labor conditions and collective consumer services, as well as the manner in which workers spontaneously react to the organization of labor. The result of a research undertaken in 1977/78 in a metallurgic enterprise in the state of Minas Gerais, this study is based on an inspection of the archives of the enterprise and on interviews held with members of the administration and various categories of workers.
