Resumo
While acknowledging the importance of using new methods for the study of peripheral societies, the author discusses the potentialities and limitations of oral history reports. Taking the study of Yucatán peasants as an example, she seeks to evaluate the risks involved in the collection and interpretation of life histories through such reports. Of special importance are the uses that the social scientist makes of different time frames at the very moment when such reports are collected. This paper emphasizes the close relation· ship that exists between oral history and the history of mentalities, lexicology, and related disciplines whenever the analysis of these materials is concerned. ln this sense, the methodology and techniques employed by the social scientist for the assemblage and evaluation of oral history reports constitute the guideline of his approach.
