Resumo

The paper reexamines the relationship between modes of production and social stratification through a case study involving different, yet coexisting, types of social organization, as found in the context of tile and brick manufacturing in an area of the state of Ceará, in the Brazilian Northeast. Three different setups are described: a brickyard, a small ceramics factory which operated· on the premises of a farm, and a large ceramics factory installed in the area as part of a major industrialization project supported by regional development agencies. The author discusses the effects of the mechanization of manufacturing processes on the social stratification systems, whereby some of the tasks performed become simpler, thus losing some of their status value, while others, particularly supervisory tasks, gain a higher standing. ln this context, the social stratification system becomes broader. The author also makes use of qualitative descriptions to point out the complexity of social organization prevailing within the handicrafts system, as opposed to production processes involving machinery. The study involved a combination of participant observation and survey techniques, wherein the former served to delineate the questions which would be systematically answered by the latter.
