Resumo
Starting with a brief analysis of the main characteristics of the so-called Swedish model, the article examines the current crisis in Swedish social democracy, with special emphasis on the reshaping of the country's party system, the performance of the Socialdemokratiska Arbetarpartiet (Social Democratic Party) at the polis, and the latter party's changing relations with the Confederation of Manual Labor Unions. It is argued that the main girders of Sweden's broad-reaching welfare state have been undermined by the restructuring the productive system, entailing both endogenous and exogenous factors, and by the strategic re-directioning of the Social Democratic Party and the Confederation of Manual Labor Unions. In conclusion, it is suggested that the peculiarities of this model - faced with the problems of various orders discussed in this article - have grown so indistinct that today it is plausible to question the singularity of Sweden's model of social and political development.
