Resumen
The factors determining the participation of workers in Argentinian industrial union are examined in this study. The limitations deriving from the type of data used in the study are pointed out. Next, the authors define participation as the proportion of workers who take part in elections for the choice of union leaders over the total number of union members, and they analyse the empirical relationship between some determinant factors and this indicator of union participation. Conclusions include: the size of the industrial establishment is a determinant factor whose influence is more marked in the first phases of technological development; the worker's access to consumption varies simultaneously with technological development; the interaction between workers and employees does not vary simultaneously with technological development. The empirical study confirms the Marxist thesis as to the conditions of union participation in the first phases of technological development. ln the following phases, the empirical data seem rather to confirm the "abourgeoisement" thesis. However, the authors emphasize that 1t is necessary to consider the existence oi two types of market in the same society: the monopolistic market (including the multi-national corporations) and the competitive market. This distinction, not considered by the "abourgeoisement" thesis, is indispensable, since these different markets determine different patterns of union participation.
