Resumen
Based on the relation between two highly abstract categories as dealt with by Hegel and Nietzsche - that is, "master" and "slave" - the article endeavors to apprehend some of the presuppositions underlying the Weber-Marx divergence, departing from the diagnoses of modernity as an "iron cage" and in terms of "alienation". In the second part of the article, Nietzsche's influence on Weber is explored in greater depth and a new (and more radical) interpretation of this influence is advanced, grounded on Weber' s concept of legitimization. Pervading the entire text is a concern with the social sciences' use of images of "final significance" and their relation to values, especially in constructing limit types in domination and stratification.
