Resumen
This article is intended to provide an overview of the 1994 elections in Brazil. The author first calls readers' attention to the importance of the electoral dispute itself and its results in terms of consolidating democracy in the country: acceptance of the rules of the game, recognition of the results' legitimacy by the most significant political players, an increase in the number of Congressional representatives from popular sectors etc. Secondly, he analyzes the results per se, stressing the process of fragmentation and party regionalization with the consolidation of a number of medium-sized parties, the progress made by the PSDB and PT, and the stagnation of the PMDB.
