Resumen
This article discusses the values and attitudes of the Brazilian political elites and explores their potential consequences vis-à-vis the consolidation of a more inclusive democratic order in the country. The argument is that the elite's values and beliefs are essential for building a political order to the extent that they represent basic parameters for political choice. The article analyzes data from a survey held among four sectors of the Brazilian elite: business, members of Congress, high public administrative officials, and trade union leaders. One of the most significant results is the apparently acute awareness by the elites with regard to the country's social problems, even thought they display little willingness to take collective initiatives to solve the country's problems of poverty and/or extreme inequality.
