Resumen
The human sciences have occupied a marginal space in research on the history of science, especially as far as the period from the fifteenth through the seventeenth centuries. This is mainly because researchers have not yet managed to move beyond their fascination with the Scientific Revolution. The present article seeks to attach greater value to the "place" of the humanities. ln so doing, it points out some of this area's specific contributions to the cultural-cognitive process responsible for shaping the concept of modem within the field of knowledge. lt is concluded that during this period the investigation of man and the study of nature arose from common ground, that is, from the spatial-temporal fashioning of the setting in which Renaissance man resided. However, the triumph of a "technical perception of reality" represented the destructuring of the humanist "paradigm" based on a "rhetorical perception of reality". And this is perhaps the reason why the humanities' place in the history of science has not yet been properly recognized.
