Resumen
This paper discusses, from an anthropo-sociological perspective, the divisive effects on societies of cumulative cleavages along racial, cultural, and class lines. ln such a case, members of the same ethnic group are also bearers of a distinct culture and belong to the same social class in opposition to other social classes with their own separate culture and ethnicity. lt is argued that, in Brazil, the absence of significant cultural differences between the various ethnic groups assures the feasibility of a social integration effort oriented towards the multiracial differentiation of all social classes, thus effectively changing the present situation in which practically all elite positions are filled by Whites. Such an effort should be based on a broad educational and vocational program capable of selecting, on a multiracial basis, gifted children from the popular classes, providing them with optimal educational conditions, from grade school all the way into graduate training, and having them oriented towards scientific, technical, and managerial professions.
