Creada en 1966, publica trabajos inéditos e innovadores, procedentes de investigaciones académicas, de autores brasileños y extranjeros. Resumen
This paper seeks to understand the role of the Brazilian union movement in the process of transition to democracy. Departing from the recognition that the extension of citizenship to the working class is a central element in the democratization of Brazilian society, the authors address the question of the relations between union and party since 1964. Based on the responses to a survey conducted with some 200 union leaders and activists in seven states of the country, the authors indicate the prevailing ambiguity within the union movement as to its own political nature. The dominant notion that political life should be subordinated to union action undermines the possibility of changing the union structure and ends up in the isolation of the labor movement from the general movement of society towards na encompassing democratic project.
