Resumen
The author analyses the Brazilian party system from 1945 to 1962 in terms of the dynamics of political realignment, suggesting that the system's instability derived both from the number of relevant political parties and the pattern of distribution of electoral preferences. System instability, stemming from changes in electoral preferences, reflected the voters' low degree of party identification. It seeks to demonstrate also that the major changes suffered by the party system were not provoked by the quantitative growth of the electorate, or changes in its social composition. The central point is that system instability expressed a joint process of political realignment on the part of the voters and of the political parties.
