Resumen
This article provides a short survey of Latin American experience in the field of the inter· relations between Science, Technology and Development. The research method adopted was to review the literature produced by Latin American economists, engineers and planners in this field, particulary in the last five years, in the effort to see (1) if any clearly different "approaches" or "traditions" in this literature could be distinguished, and (2) if so, to then illustrate each of these distinct "approaches" by discussion of their principal features and by quotations from the authors concerned. As a result of this literature review, four substantially different lines of approach were identified: these we have called 1) the "technological dependence" approach, 2) the "autonomy promotion" approach, 3) the "microeconomic- historical" approach, and 4) the "appropriate technology" approach. ln the article, each one of these four approaches is described and discussed in turn. The underlying goal of the article is to offer this categorization of the literature into "four approaches" as a tool to help in assembling an overall vision of how Latin American authors have analysed the growing fund of Latin American experience in this critically important field.
