Dialética da Modernidade: A Teoria Crítica e o Legado do Marxismo do Século XX

Therborn, Göran

Resumo

The article argues that Marxism is the stream of thought that has best managed to capture and express the contradictory character of modernity over the past one hundred years, by revealing a nature that is at one and the sarne!' time emancípationist and oppressive, progressive and exploitational. Different lines within Marxist thought have highlighted different dimensions of this dialectic of modernity, yielding a highly variegated and plural twentieth-century legacy, whose main expressions are analyzed in the article. Criticai theory and "Westem Marxism" are deemed particular moments within this overall evolution. The various impacts and expressions of Marxism around the world are assodated with four historically different routes towards and through modemity: endogenous transformation; the struggle against externai obstacles; the "Colonial Zone"; and modernization induced from outside. The article doses by (re)affirming the relevance of Marxian dialectics to an understanding of capitalism's persistently contradictory nature at this dose of the century.
