Resumo
As has been the case in other disciplines, it was through controversy and debate that anthropology established its traditions. One particular debate, published in Contributions to Indian Sociology under the title "For a Sociology of India", is examined in this paper. Special attention is devoted to the development of the journal from 1957, when the contenders were all European, to the moment it was handed over to Indians at the end of the sixties, continuing up to the contemporary effort to fashion an "Indian cosmopolitism" as an heir to both classical Hindu thought as well as traditional European sociology. A discussion of disciplinary debates in general and a comparison with the Brazilian case doses the article.
