Resumo

Contrary to the conventional wisdom about organizations, organization structures reveal little about the ways in which its component elements are integrated or the ways in which available resources (of an economic, administrative, or political nature) are distributed. Structures are better understood as a discourse whose objective is to rationalize and legitimate daily organizational activities and practices. This paper presents the results of a study of two types of first-grade educational institutions, public and private, in Rio de Janeiro. In particular, it demonstrates the usefulness of a structural-disjunctive and negotiation model of organizational analysis. The author concludes that rather than agencies of socialization and training for the labor market, schools are agencies devoted to formal culture and the constitution of status groups.
