The Soybean Market in the Southeast of Mato Grosso (Brazil): an Analysis of the Relations Between Farmers and Companies from the Economic Sociology Point of View

Wesz Junior, Valdemar João

Abstract

ABSTRACT The goal of this work is to analyze the way commercial relations between companies and soybean producers in South-East Mato Grosso (Brazil) are built and maintained, using Economic Sociology as the main theoretical-methodological approach. Thus, a broad set of qualitative and quantitative research techniques such as bibliographic review, statistical analysis, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation were included. The results show that, although soybeans are characterized as a standardized market, with an internationally established price, based on a global trade dominated by transnational corporations and with significant participation of large landowners, it does not mean that this market is protected from local dynamics and immune to the influence and interference of social, historical, political and cultural issues. Although the price of the product, the terms of payment, the deadlines are conditioning factors of the commercial transactions, in many situations they are not the determining elements of these relationships, which pervades the history of relationships, trust, friendships, family ties, reciprocity, moral values, reputations etc.
