O Cangaço e a Política da Violência no Nordeste Brasileiro

Souza, Amaury de

Resumo

Illustrating one type of social protest movement, this case study focuses on a historical synthesis and types of social banditry. The use of organized violence is related to the local patriarcal social and political order and to a realignment of the patterns of power and a system itself distinct from the patriarcal order. Violence is interpreted as an institutionalized and secularized phenomenon. The analysis includes a detailed historical study of several "bandit" movements and their leadership. Conclusions include: that an alienated peasant can become an entrepreneur of violence, that violence is a catalyst for the decay of the patriarchal order, and that violence is a mode of access to socioeconomic achievement.
