Resumo

The present article endeavors to interpret the gamut of ideas concerning violence and crime expressed in a 228,000-questionnaire survey conducted in Greater Rio de Janeiro - the largest opinion poll ever undertaken in Brazil. The common sense reflected in these answers is more highly differentiated than usual and contains explicit ideas and implicit rules or principles that are interpreted here using the theory of the ambiguity, or bizarre nature, of such cultural expressions. ln order to identify patterns that may explain observed differences, the latter have been grouped by sex, neighborhood, and age. Special attention is paid to images of the criminal and to the forms of punishment advocated, among which the death penalty and forced labor stand out.
