Resumo

ln a review of the literature on the relation between political regimes and development, the argument that authoritarian regimes occasion higher economic growth levels is seen to often be advanced. An assessment of quantitative evidence concerning Brazil and qualitative evidence concerning other Latin American nations demonstrates the implausibility of any argument linking authoritarianism to greater economic efficiency.
