A Abertura e a Nova Classe Média na Política Brasileira: 1977-1982

Boschi, Renato

Resumo

This article focuses on the new urban middle class as a collective actor towards the end of the military regime in the context of the "abertura" process. The article examines three facets of the middle class's associative practices: neighborhoud associations, professional and technical associations, and the trade union movement of salaried professionals, all of which emerged around 1977/78. This associative spurt occurred not only as a consequence of the liberalization process but also as a result of major structural changes which Brazilian society underwent in the last decade. ln tum, all these associative activities affected the pace and timing of the transition towards democraçy. Some of the dilemmas of the art of association under authoritarianism are pointed out: Qrganized collectivities range from an interest group model to that of social movements, an ambiguity which makes the institutionalization of a pluralist system difficult. The article concludes, however, by showing how these associative forms constitute a new ingredient in Brazilian society, essential for the consolidation of a new political order.
