Resumo
The author examines the different notions of citizenship current in Brazil at the time of the proclamation of the Republic. He concludes that the predominant ones were the liberal view of limited participation, the positivist vision of integrative participation and the anarchist dream of negation of participation. The liberal democratic notion of citizenship was held by a minority, or else, did not exist. He suggests that today, nearly a century later, the problem of how to reconcile integration with representation of interests through a democratic state still confronts those who dream of a new Republic.
